Study reveals adolescents are biggest liars of the bunch

It may not come as a shock to many parents that teenagers take the prize for being the most frequent and proficient liars among us all.

This is according to the first study into age-related dishonesty published in a paper entitled From Junior to Senior Pinocchio.

The study sampled over 1 000 people aged between six to 77 and found that peak dishonesty occurs in adolescence.

It claims that the average adolescent tells three lies a day and 60% lie up to five times daily. Approximately 75% of adolescents lie in total.

Results also show that, overall, human beings tell an average of two lies a day, with wide age variations.

In addition, the study found that young children and pensioners are the most honest people in society.

This is attributed to the fact that the frequency with which humans lie and their ability to get away with it both increase to young adulthood then decline with age, possibly due to changes that occur in the brain.
