Tally of cop killings up by seven from 2014 over same period

At least 54 South African Police Service (Saps) members have been killed since January 2015, an increase by over 10% on the same period last year.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo says that 29 of the officers were killed off duty, while 25 were died on the job.

Last week a Hawks official, Petrus Holz (50), was stabbed to death while changing flat tyres on the N2 highway in Cape Town, a policeman was shot dead in Jeppestown in Johannesburg, and another two killed in shootouts in Temba and Vosloorus.

CapeTalk presenter Kieno Kammies spoke Naidoo about the measures in place to curb the number of officers killed on and off duty.

The circumstances and reasons under which our police officers are killed varies; which makes it more difficult to implement any particular strategy to curb this.
