Thuli Madonsela appeals to Parliament to go back to 'South Africa of Madiba'

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has appealed to Parliament to return to the aspirational body that it was envisaged to be by Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo and other South African visionaries.

This comes after Madonsela briefed the media in Pretoria on Monday, delivering the speech she hoped to make in Parliament during the sitting of the ad hoc committee on Nkandla.

Madonsela was not afforded the opportunity to address Parliament on her Nkandla investigation and report findings.

I'm not asking for special treatment. If Parliament refuses to comply with the Constitution, I do hope the people of South Africa take this matter to court.

Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela

WATCH: Madonsela calls a media briefing at her offices in Pretoria to set the record straight on the Nkandla report.

She said in her statement that Parliament is deliberately withholding funds from her office and warned a defiance against her office is growing.

Dialogue is the first thing we have to do. I hoped to address Parliament directly. My accountability is the same and there is no reason why I shouldn't have the opportunity. We have deviated from the architecture of our democracy.

Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela

Madonsela has also issued a warning about the continued attacks on her office, and says it is up to South Africans to defend it.
