Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi has instructed Glencore to shut down its Optimum coal mine because it did not follow proper protocol in its retrenchment process.
The company says its had to cut 380 jobs and close some of its operations because of poor market conditions.
In addition, the mine says its suffered further financial strain after selling coal to Eskom at a low price.
The special Advisor to Minister of Mineral Resources – Advocate Mahlodi Muhofe says they are aware of the market challenges but that is no excuse.
