Another cop killed and expert says criminal confidence is growing

Both metro police and members of the SA Police Service seem to be under attack following the killing of yet another officer in a business robbery in Orange Farm south of Johannesburg.

Koketso Sachane spoke with Dr. Johan Burger, Senior Researcher in the Crime and Justice Program at the Institute for Security Studies.

Burger says that criminals are emboldened by the knowledge that the force is inadequately trained and equipped and lacks insight into possible threats.

He says as a result, criminals have become more brazen and robberies more violent.

The problem with these criminals is that they are growing in confidence. They are prepared to take police officers on. Our police service still needs to adapt to this new type of criminal attitude.

Dr. Johan Burger, Security Studies policing expert

The aggravated robbery rate has risen by 18% in the last two financial years, and he predicts that the figure will be higher this year.

We forget that our police are the 'thin blue line' between ordinary citizens and violent criminals . When crime levels increase, so does the pressure on the police.

Dr. Johan Burger, Security Studies policing expert

According to Burger, the increase in aggravated robbery is directly linked to the rise in the number of police murders.

Burger says that the public must continue to support the police in their efforts to fight crime and protect South Africans.
