Defective HIV test kits recalled but 'no patient got an incorrect result'

Defective HIV test kits showing incorrect positive results have been recalled countrywide.

Earlier this week the Cape Times reported that two batches of faulty rapid-test kits had been sent out to the Western Cape, North West, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Cape.

Speaking to Africa Melane on 702 and Cape Talk's Weekend Breakfast, Deputy Director General of the Department of Health, Dr Yogan Pillay explained that although the test kits were defective the precautionary measures that the Department has put in place exist to prevent any patient receiving an incorrect result.

No patient got an inaccurate or wrong result, every patient got the correct result. If there was a discordant test result on the rapid test they were sent for a third test called the Eliza, and only then given the result.

Dr Yogan Pillay, DoH Deputy Director General
