The South African Police Service (Saps) have recovered 24 stolen vehicles in a countrywide intelligence-driven operation targeting ‘backyard’ panel beaters, chop shops, tow-truck operators and mechanical shops.
Operation Tornado started this past weekend, in an effort to fight back against vehicle theft - one of the biggest crimes in the country.
It has already resulted in 29 arrests across all nine provinces. Several guns, vehicles, engines and gearboxes have also been seized.
CapeTalk presenter Kieno Kammies spoke with Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, National Spokesperson for Saps.
The national operation started on Friday. It is multi-disciplinary operation to uncover illegal activity. We identified nearly 40 backyard dealerships. It the first operation of its kind, but it will not be the last.— Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, National Spokesperson of the SAPS
According to Naidoo, the Eastern Cape has had the most criminal activity in this regard.
