The complexities of domestic violence in South Africa

50% of South African women have suffered some form of emotional and verbal abuse, according to a World Health Organisation study in 2013.

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development‚ Weziwe Thusi‚ on Monday warned women against tolerating and staying in abusive relationships.

This comes following the arrest of a 46-year-old man in connection with the murder of his girlfriend whose remains were found burning in a forest near his home.

In light of Women's Month conversations facilitated across the country, Africa Melane spoke to Acting Executive Director for People Opposing Women Abuse (Powa) Sakina Mohamed about why domestic abuse continues to be swept under the rug.

According to Mohamed, many South African women struggle to walk away from abusive situations as they intersect with other emotions, relationships and social misconceptions.

Women need to stand up and say enough is enough. Society doesn't understand the impact of abuse. It is not okay. Despite our progressive Constitution, we are a society at war with our women and children - at war with ourselves.

Sakina Mohamed, Acting Executive Director for Powa

She says society needs to hold abusers accountable, instead of reducing abuse to the 'hardships' of womanhood or encouraging victims to 'stick it out'.

Reformed abusers and survivors also shared their experiences with Mohamed and presenter Africa Melane.
