Apartheid Icon Adriaan Vlok turns a new leaf

The name of Adriaan Vlok - like that of the Defence Minister Magnus Malan and former President PW Botha - had become synonymous with Apartheid. More recently, though, Vlok made it into the media spotlight following his public gesture of washing the feet of Rev Frank Chikane - a man who had been an assassination target.

And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings.

The apartheid icon now cruises solo in his Nissan bakkie through the streets of Olievenhoutbosch, a poor township in Centurion, distributing food parcels and second-hand clothing at a disability center and crèches.
