Plans are underway to extend Operation Phakisa to the mining industry

Following the local mining industry’s plans to retrench as many as 10 000 workers due to the dire economic situation in the mining sector, President Jacob Zuma on Thursday announced plans to tackle the issue.

The President has announced plans to roll out Operation Phakisa to the mining sector in October this year. Operation Phakisa is government’s economic and development fast-tracking plan which has previously been implemented in the country’s ocean economy.

President Jacob Zuma says that an alarming number of mining companies in the country are operating at a loss.

CapeTalk’s John Maytham spoke to Mamokgethi Molopyane, Mining & labour analyst:

According to Molopyane the President’s announcement has no substance and this is often the weakness of our government.

Even when President Jacob Zuma says there’s going to be a focus on mining, it is still empty, in a skeleton form in terms of details.
