At the high court in Pretoria this afternoon, Government is asking for leave to appeal court’s ruling that Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir be kept in South Africa, until a decision was made about whether to hand him over to the International Criminal Court.
Earlier this year al-Bashir left the Waterkloof Airforce Base, despite a ruling by the court that Home Affairs ensure he not leave the country.
The judgment came following an application by the Southern African Litigation Centre. His departure despite that ruling led to the Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng asking for a meeting with President Jacob Zuma, to discuss the relationship between the Judiciary and Government.
