Nurses who caused baby death under investigation

Nurses 'ignored' mother's agony

Patients at the Rahima Moosa hospital have told EWN how nurses ignored a woman who went into premature labour and lost her baby at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Coronationville in Johannesburg last week.

Mia Lindeque told John Robbie more about these allegations this morning. The mother apparently gave birth to a premature baby (born 4 months too early). The mother screamed and asked nurses to help her but was ignored by the nurses, according to other patients who saw a full view of this incident in horror. She subsequently lost her baby and reportedly had to clean herself after.

The mother is currently traumatised and could not speak to EWN. Gauteng Health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu is apparently 'extremely shocked' about the behaviour of health care practitioners and has called for an investigation into this particularly matter.

Some reaction from @702JohnRobbie followers on Twitter:

Investigation underway

Speaking to Stephen this afternoon, Gauteng MEC for Health, Qedani Mahlangu said that it is 'regrettable' that a hospital would treat a mother in a manner that she was treated.

MEC Mahlangu outlined that there were procedures that the nurses were meant to take, including a 2-hourly health check conducted in light of the fact that she was bleeding and her blood pressure was high. These were not done.

She adds that she is aware of the names of the nurses and that a task team is currently doing a detailed analysis and disciplinary action will be taken in due course.

She said that although there is no excuse for bad nurses, there are issue facing nurses; including being overworked, poor working conditions and a bad reputation that the nursing profession has because of a few bad nurses.
