Why are playdates important for children?

School time and extra mural activities after school, while they fill up your child’s afternoon and leave no room for mischief, experts say it is overloading children.

According to parenting expert, Nikki Bush children of all ages are suffering from burnout and it’s starting as early as preschool.

Bush says that if your child has no time for play dates with friends and you no longer have time to play games with each other, then you are living in the red zone.

CapeTalk’s/702’s Africa Melane (standing in for Redi Tlhabi) spoke to Nikki Bush explaining the importance of downtime for children.

There are so many children in this country who don’t have access to extra mural activities and yet for those of us who do we can go to extremes where we have children literally running from pillar to post all afternoon

Bush says even at pre-school level, there are reports of children who are super tired, stressed, aggressive and ultra-sensitive.

  • Working parents need to keep children occupied until after work
  • Giving children what parents never had
  • Developing children's talent
  • Parents wanting the perfect child
  • Many parents live through their children successes (have a huge need for their children to win)

Why is downtime important for children?

  • Consolidation of learning
  • Processing the day
  • Developing resourcefulness – learning how to entertain themselves
  • Learning how to make fun out of nothing
  • Better sleep – most children today are not getting enough sleep
