Marikana massacre: 'There must've been political pressure'

17 August 2015 12:38 PM

Relatives of slain miners plan on charging Ramaphosa and Phiyega for their roles in Marikana shootings, Stephen explores this.

It was confirmed yesterday, at the commemoration of the Marikana massacre, that families of slain miners are planning on charging Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega for their roles in the Marikana shootings.

Speaking to Stephen Grootes, attorney for the families, Advocate Dali Mpofu said that this civil claim is indeed attached to Ramaphosa and Phiyegam and not Jacob Zuma. He said that he is confident that they will win these claims, as the evidence is there.

He said that they (legal team representing miner families) don't believe that this was a matter without political directive. He assured Stephen that these actions taken were not taken without the instruction from the victims to launch these claims.
