'Foreign-owned security firms not a real risk to national security'

The African National Congress (ANC) is intent on pressurising President Jacob Zuma into enforcing legislation on foreign-controlled security firms.

The ruling party called on government to immediately remove all private security companies it has contracted to guard national keypoints, for the fear that national security is being compromised.

This comes after the party’s national executive committee lekgotla in Pretoria recently.

The Private Security Industry Regulation Amendment Bill awaits President Zuma’s signature and would prevent foreigners from having a controlling stake in local private security firms.

The draft law also calls for such companies to be 51% South African-owned.

But according to CEO of the Security Industry Alliance Steve Conradie, foreign-owned security firms pose no material threat to national security because they only employ South African personnel.

Instead, Director of Tutwa Consulting Peter Draper says that the implications of this bill will seriously affect the country's position as an investment destination.
