At the High Court in Pretoria, eight former police officers are on trial for the murder of Mozambican taxi driver, Mido Macia, after they allegedly dragged him behind a van through the streets of the East Rand suburb.
Macia’s body was found in a holding cell at the Daveyton police station in February 2013.
The trial has been marred by conflicting testimonials. With one witness contradicting himself, as well as former warrant officer Meshack Malele telling the court that he is actually a victim of the incident - claiming Macia assaulted him and that he was also beaten by a mob, this was however not included in his original statement filed two years ago.
Meanwhile, the State has questioned how all eight officers accused of killing the Mozambican taxi driver failed to ensure that the back door of the police van was closed.
Masego Rahlaga told the Midday Report with Stephen Grootes that Judge Bert Bam is currently listening to the closing arguments from the state and defense sides.
