Lead SA: Climb a mountain and break the silence on sexual abuse
CLIMB is an international organisation dedicated to breaking the silence on sexual violence, empowering survivors and creating a powerful movement of change.
Initiated by Poonam Thimmiah and Shada Abuhattoum after attending the 2014 One Young World Summit in Dublin –Ireland, the organisation creates awareness by sharing survivor videos across social media.
Their activities centre around captured mountaineering expeditions that support survivors of sexual abuse to overcome the challenges that stand in their way.
Today, the movement is present in 10 countries on 4 continents.
Florence Masetla, Head of CLIMB South Africa chapter shared with CapeTalk/702 koketso Sachane why Poonam and Shada started Climb.
They wanted to show by an act of climbing a mountain the difficulties of living with the silence and in certain countries if you disclose they would kill youFlorence Masetla, Head of CLIMB South Africa chapter
This weekend, the South African chapter will be climbing the Drakensberg Mountain and they can be contacted for future climbs as well as educational community outreach programs.
