WC cops commended for tighter security on illegal weapons

The Western Cape is faring much better than the rest of the country when it comes to the controls of confiscated firearms and other weapons.

This is according to Guy Lamb, Director of Safety and Violence Initiative (SaVI) at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Though South Africa has been embroiled in a number of weapons cache controversies, Lamb says that the South African Police Services (Saps) in the province have relatively safer regulation measures in place.

There are rules, regulations and standing orders for these particular facilities. But the issues vary at different stations. You will generally find firearms leaking out where there are weak points . We haven't had any serious problems in the Western Cape since the 90s.

Guy Lamb, Director of SaVi

Weapons confiscated by Saps are typically kept in secure facilities within police stations and Lamb says that is difficult to get access to firearms in the Western Cape.

According to Lamb, the weapons stolen from the Vereeniging armoury, which made their way into the hands of the 28s gang in Cape Town, are an example of how the illegal firearms trade is threatened by corrupt police systems.
