Prasa report findings worse than Nkandla and must be investigated, says Maimane

The Democratic Alliance (DA) plans to lay criminal charges against former Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) group CEO Lucky Montana.

This comes after the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s scathing report on the abuse of public funds and widespread maladministration in awarding tenders at the parastatal.

Party leader Mmusi Maimane says the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) must investigate misconduct at Prasa to determine the criminal liability of those involved in the scandal so they can be prosecuted.

He also said that the National Treasury must conduct a forensic audit, among other processes of investigation.

The Public Protector's report is not intent on investigating criminality and I feel there is a case for this matter. If we don't send a strong message out against corrupt activities, corrption will continue in South Africa.

Mmusi Maimane, DA leader

Maimane says that when government and its institutions blatantly ignore remedial action, the opposition have no choice but to go to the courts.

Executive Secretary of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac) Lawson Naidoo says that recourse through the courts is important for democracy.

However, Naidoo advises that the number of political cases before the courts are problematic.

We are seeing the judicialisation of our politics. We can only strengthen institutions of state by looking at recourse through the courts as a last resort.

Lawson Naidoo, Executive Secretary of Casac
