‘Religion is play’

Some people would take offense at the idea that religion is play. Religion, they would say, is sacred, and play is trivial.

Peter Gray, research professor Boston College, said to believe without evidence is to make believe. To make believe is to play.

Gray has written the book Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life and also has a blog where he focuses on religion.

The professor and author said all hunter-gatherer religions are polytheistic and there are multiple deities, and the deities themselves are playful.

“The essence of all religion is faith, to have faith is to believe without evidence. To believe without evidence is to make believe. To make believe is to play,” he said.

Listen Peter Gray has callers in a frenzy when he dissected the idea that religion is play.
