You could be travelling more!

Airlines Association of Southern Africa CEO, Chris Zweigenthal says that low cost airlines have led to a growth in domestic tourism, so you should really be travelling more!

While government has been working to patch up struggling national carrier South African Airways, new airlines have entered the domestic and regional market to tap into the first-time flyer market and stimulate competition.

The entrance of FlySAFair and Skywise has led to a competitive market which has resulted in more affordable domestic flights, which means South Africans have had cheaper access to travelling and exploring the country.

It started out as low cost airlines with a basic price ... but I think with the competition that's come into the market, you've actually had them in South Africa going a lot back to basics where you have just that base fare.

Chris Zweigenthal, Airlines Association of Southern Africa CEO

You're going to find that the full service airlines are having to look at matching the low-cost airline ... up to the end of sort of March last year we had a fairly flat growth in domestic travel, probably largely affected by the low GDP growth but with the new airlines coming into the market we've seen an 8.5% increase in travel ... International is unfortunately very flat ...
