Analysts talk mining jobs

Analysts in the mining industry, Peter Major and CEO of the Chamber of Mines, Roger Baxter, weighed in on the jobs task team set up by the Department of Mineral Resources.

A jobs task team set up by the Department of Mineral Resources says it has not been able to secure a moratorium on retrenchments, but the government has agreed to step in and create opportunities for workers whose jobs are at risk.

The task team is made up of stakeholders from mining companies, unions and the government, and on Monday a ten-point agreement on how to manage the looming job cuts was signed.

Major said, “Let’s try and slow down the decline and see what action can follow, we need leaders who lead by action.”

The mining analyst added that at least all the parties admit that there are things going wrong.

“We were the greatest producers on this earth and we kept increasing production, the problem is there is no productivity, no working together and no innovation,” Major said.

Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi says they’ve accepted that all mining jobs won’t be saved, but they need to do as much as possible to ensure mine workers can fill different positions.

Baxter admitted that our productivity has fallen and our costs have risen but various stakeholders are trying to find ways to deal with the issue.
