Compensation fund is failing injured workers and doctors - Qualicare

The Compensation Fund has been alleged with failing injured workers and failing to pay doctors. A recent survey had shown that Gauteng doctors alone were owed more than R10 million by the fund.

The fund, which falls under the Department of Labour, provides compensation to workers injured or disabled on duty.

Dr Solly Lison, Chairperson of Qualicare - a network of 600 Accredited General Practitioners across the Western Cape says their members have been complaining about the fund.

Over the past years there have been complaints to us at the head office that their bills have not been met and that there is no response from Coida department.

According to Dr Lison they have liaised with Parliament and other bodies but still there is no progress and most of their members will not entertain injury on duty cases.

Kieno Kammies also spoke to Vuyo Mafata, Acting Commissioner for the Compensation Fund:

Previously the processes of the compensation fund were largely manual hence we had delays in payments.

Mafata says the Department of Labour has since made changes in the leadership of the fund and introductions of the new systems in order to ease the tension.
