Roodepoort Primary to reopen next week

The mediation team that was looking into the Roodepoort Primary School stand-off has recommended to the Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura that the school be reopened on Tuesday, 8 September.

The team was set up to resolve a dispute between staff and parents, who have demanded that the principal and the deputy be fired.

The forum and parents claim that the principal was irregularly appointed despite the availability of other teachers who are better qualified.

702's Ray White spoke to Jerome Lottering of the Davidsonville Community Forum (DCF), who said that pupils who went to different schools were negatively affected by the dispute and that the decision needed to be made for the children’s sake.

Lottering said that, pending further investigation into the principal and his deputy, the school leadership will return as is, however, a supervisor is being put in place to monitor the situation.

As a way to ensure that normality returns to the school, parents agreed to be more active by joining the school governing body and kids will participate in extra-curricular activities. There has also been assurance that there will be no disruptions going forward.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi confirmed to the Davidsonville Community Forum (DCF) that a catch-up programme would be put in place for the pupils to catch up, including extra classes at the school.
