Jan Pieterse, the man accused of throwing drain acid over his former girlfriend, was cross examined in the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court today.
Pieterse told the court that he was acting in self defence when he threw a can of acid at Ines Antonio, who sustained burns to her upper body, arms and neck last year.
702's Azania Mosaka spoke to National Burn Association of SA's executive director, Colin Lee, and the director of a support group for acid burn victims, Aida Muaniki, to understand these attacks holistically.
Azania referred to some global incidents of the problem and asked Lee to explain if it could be linked to domestic violence in general.
... It's obviously an extension of domestic violence and as such it's one of these methodologies that men use to attack women... to try and scar them physically and psychologically.— National Burn Association of SA's executive director, Colin Lee
