The rand, spring and tourism

Thulani Nzima, CEO of SA Tourism, discussed the rand and the change of season as well as the impact the two have on tourism.

The rand has continued to come under pressure against major currencies.

On Monday the rand reached its lowest level ever against the dollar of 14.01.

Nzima argued that South Africa is a long haul destination and is largely sold on a brochure basis and schedules are always revised after every 6 months.

“When we have currency fluctuation it’s not possible for the tour operators to change their brochures so throughout the year they sell us what they have in their brochures,” He said.

Last month, Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom admitted the new visa regulations had a huge impact on the industry, with the figures for the first quarter of this year showing a “worrying drop” in the number of visitors.

SA Tourism’s CEO said the matter is in “safe hands.”

“Government is taking the mater seriously and I am reluctant to attribute the decline in our performance to the impact of the immigration policy because there are various things that have come to play in the past few months.”
