Today's Big Stories, Homo Naledi: All eyes on SA's Cradle of Humankind

Doubts over Homo Naledi could be a case of sour grapes

Yesterday the world stopped and focused on South Africa for a while. The historical unveiling of the discovery of the remains of the so-called Homo naledi trove of fossils at Maropeng, at the Cradle of Humankind, has been met with some criticism - of the claims that this is a new species.

Sarah Wild is a science journalist who’s been looking at this issue. She speaks to Stephen about this criticism.

Wild says that questions are over if this is a new species or simply a variation of existing species.

She doesn't however take away from the finding, calling it "a spectacular and amazing find".

She says that there are also questions over why leader of the expedition, Paleoanthropologist, Lee Berger revealed the finding before dating it. This would have given light to where in history Homo naledi fits in. Scientists around the world are waiting for these numbers.

She also adds that there needs to discern over the criticism being legitimate scientific questioning and a case of 'sour grapes'.
