More questions than answers currently on NHI plans

Given the rising cost of healthcare in South Africa, it can be understood why there is pressure placed on government to speed up the National Health Insurance.

Stephen spoke to Attorney at Section 27, Sasha Stevenson about the implication of the National Health Insurance (NHI), as well as what needs to be provided for it to be a success.

Stevenson explains that the NHI is meant to equalise the cost of healthcare in South Africa.

She said that the pilot process for the project is supposed to be testing 3-5 years of different interventions. At the moment, there is no whitepaper with the detail on what is being piloted, raising a lot of questions, such as how it will be funded and who will benefit?

She adds, on a positive note, that what it has meant so far is that there has been more investment in the public health care system.

Minister 'optimistic' about NHI plans

Minister Motsoaledi spoke to John about Public Health in South Africa and the status of the National Health Insurance. He also spoke about the issues surrounding Regulations 8 and the partnership with the USAID to raise awareness about Tuberculosis (TB).

Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi also told John that he has recovered well after a recent health scare and received fantastic care at Steve Biko Academic Hospital (a public hospital).

I am absolutely optimistic about the National Health Insurance. We are not the first country to start it and it has taken each country a long time. It needs thorough preparation and planning.

Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister of Health
