A closer look at home-schooling

About 60 000 South African children are home-schooled, according to a Stats SA 2011 census. The figure is likely to be higher now as enrollment has grown exponentially over the years.

702's Azania Mosaka today spoke to Department of Basic Education spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, and Clonard Distance Education spokesperson, Amy Nortje, about the regulations around it and why some parents choose to teach their children at home.

Azania asked Mhlanga about the department's position on the subject.

We need to ensure we monitor what providers do, because whatever they do needs to conform to the prescripts of the national curriculum in the terms of the national curriculum statement... itcannot deviate from the norm

Asked about the increased uptake in the home-schooling option, Norte responded:

We are seeing more and more parents who are choosing to take their children out of mainstream schooling and home-school them. Teachers try their best but there are so many students to give attention to.
