Social Workers have warned that changes suggested in Children’s Amendment Bill could more than double the number of children in the overstretched foster care system.
Social Work Lecturer at University of Pretoria, Sipho Sibanda, who made presentations in Parliament, says the legislative changes did not address the current foster care crisis.
Sibanda spoke to John this morning about why there is a need for an alternative.
Sipho suggests that it could help is if the children could be looked after by relatives who are then able to apply for a kinship care grant.
Sipho says parliamentarians are seemingly happy with the idea of a kinship grant. However, parliament is concerned about the lack of social workers in the country.
