Numsa awaits police investigation to identify Intercape attackers

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says it will wait on the findings of the police investigation to determined whether members of the union were involved in the recent attack on an Intercape bus.

According to Numsa's Western Cape regional secretary, Vuyo Lefele, there is no compelling reason for the union's members to act in such a manner.

We are shocked by this incident and we condemn the barbaric criminality enacted on Intercape. The perpetrator should be brought to book. We are happy to hear about the investigation and will await the outcome.

Vuyo Lefele, Numsa's Western Cape Regional Secretary

The driver of the torched double-decker bus, Denis Moyo, has reportedly identified one of the petrol bombers as a striking Intercape staffer and a member of Numsa.

However, Lefele said striking members were happy as the union and Intercape were reaching the end of their negotiations and dispute resolution.

We have made our submission to Intercape and we have made a number of agreed upon compromises to end the strike.

Meanwhile, Western Cape police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder after the bus was set alight in Strand on Tuesday night.

Two people died, while five other passengers remain in hospital with severe burns after the bus was petrol-bombed.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said the police investigation would shed light on the incident.

The bus driver apparently indicated that he identified one of the assailants as a striking employee. Regardless of what I or the unions think, the issue is what the police investigation reveals.

JP Smith, MayCo Member for Safety and Security

Smith said the City's special investigations unit had been dispatched to assist the police with the probe, adding that the acting mayor would offer a reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the attackers.
