Airbus strengthens alliance with SA's aircraft companies

Major global aircraft manufacturer Airbus has signed a memorandum of understanding with two South African companies.

This is in an effort to further develop the local aviation industry, with the economic value estimated to amount to R10 billion over the next 10 years.

Demand is doubling every 15 years for passenger air transport and editor of Plane Talking and spokesperson for Airbus, Linden Birns, says the compound growth of air transport is nearly 5% per year.

According to Birns, this growth has increased the demand for improved aircraft that are fuel efficient and environmentally friendly.

A large portion of the work is taking place in the Western Cape and in Cape Town. It is very exciting.

Birns says South Africa has been identified as one of the strategic nations to partner with for both the manufacturing and research development of air travel.

We've set up a network of collaborative partner countries and recognise that knowledge and capacity can come from other cultures and countries.
