How clever criminals can remotely lock your computer (until you pay a ransom)

Redi Tlhabi interviewed tech guru Aki Anastasiou about ransomware, a type of malware (software which is specifically designed to disrupt or damage a computer system) that prevents users from using their computers or smartphones.

The ransomware forces its victims to pay a ransom – usually demanded in Bitcoin – in order to regain access to their computers or smartphones.

Anastasiou also talked about Apple’s new operating system and the noise-cancelling Plantonics B825 headset.

Ransomware

Ransomware has been around since 2005, but criminal coders have recently vastly improved on the scheme through the use of “cryptware”.

Cryptware encrypts your files in a way that only the attacker can reverse instead of merely locking your keyboard or computer.

Ransomware usually gets on your computer through iffy emails and websites.

Attackers can also deliver it directly to your computer if they’ve already created a “backdoor” through which they can get access.

What’s new in iOS

Improvements include enhanced performance, battery life and security. But the main enhancement must be to Siri, who is getting freakishly good.

Plantonics B825 headset

This new blue tooth headset has a very long battery life and range of 45 meters.

It also boasts superior noise cancellation tech.
