Gauteng MEC for human settlements, Jacob Mamabolo, has expressed shock and disappointment at how millions of rands have been wasted in housing projects by contractors and his predecessors.
Mamabolo spoke to 702's Xolani Gwala about his trip to Alexandra to launch the ward-based housing audit programme, which will assess all the human settlement projects not completed in the province.
Listen to the conversation below:
The Alexandra housing project was reportedly abandoned in November 2011. Among the companies involved in the project was Shuma Construction, which was liquidated in 2012, forcing the abandonment of the entire project.
The City of Johannesburg was forced to hire security guards to protect the project from invasion by squatters.
The project will cost the department R20.1 million to reinstate.
