On this day, South Africans recognise and celebrate the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa. cultural wealth of the country.

CapeTalk/702’s Stephen Grootes discusses what heritage day means to South Africans and whether as South Africans we have a common heritage?

He speaks to Panashe Chigumadza, Author of Sweet Medicine and Founder Vanguard Magazine as well as Rebecca Davis, Writer at the Daily Maverick website and author of the book Best White and Other Anxious Delusions:

According to Panashe everyone in South Africa has a heritage which is celebrated differently. She says white South Africans are celebrating their heritage daily whereas black South Africans need a day like Heritage Day to put on their traditional attires and celebrate.

Rebecca Davis, Journalist

According to Davies, the heritage history of white people in South Africa is very difficult. She says there's a good reason why white South Africans have reframed Heritage Day as "Braai Day" because it is difficult to know which aspects of their culture they should celebrate.

On this Heritage Day, Cape Talk's John Maytham invited a few CapeTalk listeners, from different cultural backgrounds, to discuss what Heritage Day means to them.
