Tourism council: Visa regulations 'impractical and irregular'

The Tourism Business Council of South Africa has appealed directly to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to suspend the current visa regulations. The regulations require biometric visas and unabridged birth certificates for children when entering the country.

Ramaphosa is the chairperson of an inter-ministerial committee, which includes Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom and Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba.

702's Stephen spoke to EWN reporter Thando Khubeka about the outcome of the briefing. He also spoke to the CEO of the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa, Tshifhiwa Tshinvhengwa, about the impact of the visa regulations on the tourism industry.

Listen to the conversation below:

Let's not have a huge response to a problem that might not be so big. As an industry, we don't want to see dwindling numbers of tourists into South Africa. We need to look at it from the point of view of it being friendly to bringing in tourists into South Africa.
