Stephan Welz & Co will auction a rare early 19th century silver brewing and coffee serving “Biggin” in coffee-obsessed Cape Town on 21 October.
A “biggin” is a coffee pot with a strainer or perforated metallic vessel for holding the ground coffee, through which one pours boiling water.
The Biggin is a reminder of the centuries old evolution of coffee which has led to today's trendy hipster coffee movement, currently brewing in the Mother City.
The exceptional George III silver coffee Biggin was made by renowned London silversmith Paul Storr in 1810.
Stephan Welz & Co values it at about R80 000 to R100 000.
