There's been talk of parents complaining about their children getting too much homework. And now it turns out that the schoolbags are a burden on their own. Redi Tlhabi unpacks the issue.

There's been talk of parents complaining about their children getting too much homework. And now it turns out that the schoolbags are a burden on their own.

According to a report in the Sunday Times, local studies have found that amendments to the curriculum have resulted in pupils carrying more books to and from school, which is leading to various health problems.

Redi Tlhabi spoke to parents, some of whom said extracurricular activities also add to the problem as there is also an additional sports bag to carry.

Listen to the conversation below:

One of the listeners said her primary school granddaughter carries a bag weighing 10.6kg. Another suggested that pupils carry trolley cases, but those have their own health risks as well.

One parent suggested pushing a trolley bag rather than pulling it, which would minimise the health risks associated with the latter, while another suggested Pilates to help pupils with their posture.
