Transport Month spurs talks on most effective way to finance road infrastucture

October is transport month and South Africans are engaging in discussions about the most effective methods to create networked and convenient travel.

Mathetha Mokonyama, transport systems and operations manager at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), says there's still a long road ahead before the country achieves the best way to finance infrastructure and development.

This comes after the Western Cape High Court set aside the national road agency's controversial N1 and N2 Winelands toll project in Cape Town.

Kirsten Wilkins, urban designer and cycling advocate, says that cycling has given rise to the efforts to recognise other modes of transport on the roads.

The general perception is that bicycles are not cheap, but Wilkins says that they can be used as tools for social change.

How do we make bicycles affordable and how do we create a culture of moving in other ways? I try encourage other people to give away their unused bicycles and join advocacy groups that donate bicycles. Bicycles can be made more accessible and affordable to people who want to commute. There are options.

Wilkins says cycling is more about building communities and less about building infrastructure.

Transport month has also introduced various transport alternatives available to the public, with the Ecomobility festival standing out as a popular initiative.

Public transport analyst, Paul Browning, says the intentions of the Ecomobility festival are to show the possibilities of alternative transportation.

Of course, we don't have anything like adequate public transport yet.
