SA government wants to sneak al-Bashir back in - DA

The South African government, which was given until Monday to explain its failure to arrest Sudan President Omar al-Bashir‚ has asked for more time to present its position.

Government's request for extension on al-Bashir 'suspicious'

The DA's International Relations shadow minister Stevens Mokgalapa said the delay in response to the ICC is a thinly veiled attempt to allow al-Bashir back in the country.

Listen to the conversation with 702's Stephen Grootes below:

We feel that it is a tactic for them to smuggle back al-Bashir. This is unacceptable.

Chris Landsberg, the chairperson of the African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy, said South Africa does not want a 'showdown' with the ICC.

They want to persuade the ICC that they didn't act in bad faith and avoid the costly route of a confrontation.

SA government finds itself in a sticky situation

The Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) said the International Criminal Court infringed on South Africa’s rights in its handling of al-Bashir's visit to the country.

According to Grootes, the statement released by Dirco is evidence that government wants to find a solution to the predicament that they find themselves in.

Listen to the full conversation from 702's John Robbie Show:

I think we're in a bit of a tight corner. Professor Chris Landsberg has even said that the South African government is looking for an amicable solution and doesn't seem to want to leave the ICC.
