Close to 4 100 detainees were evacuated from Pollsmoor Prison in the Western Cape to prevent a massive outbreak of a disease contracted from close proximity to rats.

Emily Keehn, a policy specialist at the Detention Justice Forum said poor management and accountability had resulted in the overcrowding, sickness and unsanitary living conditions at Pollsmoor.
On the other hand, Western Cape Regional Commissioner for Justice and Correctional Services Delekile Klaas said hygiene problems were not unique to Pollsmoor.

Meanwhile, Constitutional Court Judge Edwin Cameron published a report on a visit he paid the facility in April, and slammed the inhumane conditions in the prison.
