Meet SAs' professional ballroom dancer and social entrepreneur, Tebogo Kgobokoe

Tebogo Kgobokoe started dancing at the age of 4 and received her first Latin American qualification at the age of 16.

She is the most revered and respected dance personality in SA. She is popularly known for her judging period on local television show, Strictly Come Dancing.

Kgobokoe is the undefeated South African Professional Ballroom champion and 7 times Latin American Champion.

Speaking to CapeTalk/702’s Redi Tlhabi, kgibokoe says she started ballroom dancing as a way to escape her strict father.

My dad was very strict. I started professional ballroom dancing just to get out of the house. Because I was an A student he couldn’t say no.

She said she never imagined herself as a professional dancer but it was through hard work and dedication that she found herself competing internationally.

I didn’t chose dance, dance chose me

Tebogo Kgobokoe, Professional dancer

Kgobokoe started her own company when she was 18 and created an opportunity for young people through the founding of Tebogo Kgobokoe Arts Academy (TKAA) in 2014.

She has won numerous prestigious awards such as the Tshwane Business-Women’s Award, Shoprite Women of the Year Award, City Press Prestige Women’s Award, CEO Magazine’s Most Influential Woman In Business and Government 2013 and 2014 and many others.

Kgobokoe is calling on South Africans to embrace dance as an academic, career and entrepreneurial opportunity. Her biggest aspiration is to offer tertiary qualification in dance.

I would love to be able to produce young people with Bcom degrees majoring in dance.
