Bookie favourite Svetlana Alexievich wins 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature

The 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature went to Svetlana Alexievich "for her polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage".

The Belarusian writer was nominated alongside Kenyan-born Professor Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, as well as Haruki Murakami (Japan), Jon Fosse (Norway), Joyce Carol Oates (USA) and Philip Roth (USA).

Earlier, 702's John Robbie spoke to Professor of English and Literature at Unisa, Kgomotso Masemola, about why he thought Prof wa Thiong’o was worthy winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature this year.

The only Africans to have won a Nobel Peace Prize in Literature are: South African JM Coetzee (2003), South African Nadine Gordimer (1991), Nigerian Wole Soyinka (1986) and Egyptian Naguib Mahfouz (1988).
