'Exploitation is a key element of human trafficking'

South Africa ranks among the 10 countries in Africa where human trafficking is worst, with 100 000 people reportedly being trafficked in the country annually.

This is according to the first LexisNexis Human Trafficking Awareness Index released in 2015.

Despite debates over official numbers, Richard Ots, Chief of Mission for South Africa's International Organisation for Migration (IOM), said available figures painted a picture of a growing rate of trafficking.

Ots said there is a shortage of specialised task teams to investigate the crimes related to human trafficking.

In light of National Human Trafficking Awareness week (October 2 – 9), he dispelled the myths surrounding the stories of human trafficking in the country.

He explained the three stages of the crime, which encompass a means of force or false promise, a level of mobilisation and an element of exploitation.
