ANC talks different language from that of government - Langalanga

The ANC's National General Council has resolved that South Africa must withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

This after long legal proceedings over Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir's controversial visit to South Africa earlier this year.

According to Azwi Langalanga, a researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), the governing party’s rhetoric is very different from that of national government.

Langalanga dismissed claims that the ICC only prosecutes African leaders, saying that crimes against humanity are most prevalent on the continent.

Listen to the full conversation from CapeTalk’s Breakfast with Kieno Kammies:

Langalanga said the country is abandoning its human rights agenda in favour of aligning with lesser value systems held by other African constituents.

However, the ANC’s International Relations Commission head, Obed Bapela, said they still believe in the principles that guided the decision to join the court in the first place.
