What is a wealth tax (and will it work)?

The feasibility of a wealth tax appears to be occupying the political agenda in South Africa.

However, tax head at Deloitte Southern Africa, Nazrien Kader says discussions on wealth tax are taking place across the world.

A wealth tax envisages that there is a levy on the creation of wealth in a country. We are not the only country discussing its merits, but South Africa has always toyed with the idea.

According to Kader, forms of wealth tax already exist in some of the country's fiscal policy, such as the capital gains tax, state duty tax and the progressive tax system.

Kader says that South Africa would stand to benefit more from the broadening of its tax base, instead of introducing an additional tax.
