'Lack of stability at leadership level of Saps concerning'

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police is concerned by the lack of stability in the South African Police Services (Saps) leadership.

This follows the suspension of National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega pending the findings of a commission of inquiry into her fitness to hold office.

Committee chairperson Francois Beukman said they welcomed the appointment of acting commissioner Lieutenant General Johannes Khomotso Phahlane.

I think it's important to have a person at the helm of the police service with the necessary leadership and managerial skills. It is a plus if you are coming from the law enforcement background.

Francois Beukman, chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police

General Phiyega is the third commissioner in a row to not complete the full five-year term.

Phiyega learnt of the news when she was in a meeting with Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police on Wednesday.
