Stressed out? Here's how to stay calm in an overwhelming world

Stress affects everybody. Although we cannot wish it away, we can learn how to competently manage it.

Behavioural psychologist Dr. Helgo Schomer explores the concept and causes of stress, what it does to our health and mind and how to recognise it.

He responded to calls from listeners and looked at how to create a coping style to help you better manage everyday stressors.

Listen to the full conversation from The Redi Tlhabi Show:

You need to really work to control your stress, it doesn't just happened by itself. Stress and strain is a reality.

Dr. Helgo Schomer, behavioural psychologist

Dr. Schomer advised that stress can be countered by proactivley creating calm energy.

Here are several forms of calm energy, according to Dr. Schomer:

  • Find a core cause: Identifying and practicing a form of spiritual faith that one relates with.

  • Unwind: Do something that you find relaxing, such as listening to music or mediation.

  • Burn it off: Physical exercise.

  • Rest your mind: Get good hours of sleep.

  • Find help: Seek support from family, friends and colleagues.

  • Go outside: Choose a place outside of your regular environment, find a safe space in nature.

  • Breathe: Create an effective breathing routine to use in response to stressful situations.

  • Walk away: Remove yourself from stress triggers as mush as possible.
