Higher education minister Blade Nzimande has announced that he has reached an agreement with university managers to cap fee increases as 6%, but protesting students have rejected the proposed 6% cap on university fee hikes for 2016 and have demanded a 0% increase.
Dr. Somadoda Fikeni spoke to John Robbie about what he feels should be a way forward in this matter. He says government would have to either borrow or rearrange their budget to raise subsidy.
He said that 'relative deprivation' followed by corruption also plays a part in making students believe that there is money somewhere.
