How Lumkani fire detection is saving lives by reducing the risk of shack fires

In 2014, 2 090 people were reported to have burned to death in the Gauteng province and in 2011, 151 people were killed in shack fires in Cape Town.

Lumkani is a social enterprise that seeks to address the challenge of shack fires in urban informal settlements in South Africa and across the globe.

Under the directorship of David Gluckman, Lumkani uses modern technology to decrease the risk of devastating fires in informal settlements.

According to Gluckman, they have developed a heat detector instead of smoke detectors because smoke is a common by-product of cooking, lighting and heating in informal settlements.

He says smoke detectors would have rendered useless.

Listen to Gluckman explaining how the heat detector works and how it has decreased shack fires in informal settlements.
